Of the various character development/life skills-based monthly themes that we have at Quest, this month’s theme, “Contribution,” is a little different.
Most of our themes such as confidence, focus, and self-control are inwardly-focused. These themes obviously have a huge impact on how we interact with the world, but they’re focused most directly on internal-development. Contribution, on the other hand, is all about looking outside yourself and helping your community. It’s the reverse of the other themes in that the benefits to yourself are more indirect.
My father’s favorite song, “Lean On Me,” by Bill Withers, comes to mind when I think in terms of “contribution.” In the song, Withers implores his friends and neighbors to seek him for help should they need it. Whether it’s lending a hand, helping to carry a load (physically or emotionally), or letting his friends borrow something, in the song, Withers indicates that he’s there, ready to help.
In the song, Withers recognizes that sometimes, we all need a little help, but all too often we’re too prideful or afraid to ask for it. He urges his friends to set aside their pride because he wants to help, but also recognizes that he, too, will one day need assistance in some way.
This sort of community-oriented mindset is far too rare these days. The people in our society tend to be so busy with their own lives and so focused on advancing themselves that they become isolated from the needs and resources within their own community.
I’d like to challenge each of you to step up and become a leader in your community by embracing this month’s theme. Look outside yourselves and become role models by finding ways to help other people within your community.
I’d also like to encourage you to take a moment and listen to the song. You can listen to a sample of Bill Withers’ “Lean On Me” on Amazon, or perhaps you can find it elsewhere on the Internet.
